Background
On October 30th, 2025, Buckingham Palace announced King Charles was stripping Prince Andrew of his HRH Prince title. Andrew had previously voluntarily agreed to stop using his other titles (Duke of York, etc.) From then on, Andrew has been officially known as Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor.
How We Refer to Andrew
Post about events after October 30th, 2025
Gert’s Royals refers to him as Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor in post covering events after October 2025. (Or Andrew M-W, if space is limited.) We do not give readers the option to change that.
Post about events before October 30th, 2025
As a general rule, we try to refer to people, by the title they held at the time of the event. (E.g. Charles is referred to as “King Charles” in post about events during his reign, and as “Prince Charles” in post about his mother or grandfather’s reign.) We think this is important for context.
Therefore, post covering events October 30th, 2025, will generally use “Prince Andrew.”
However, we recognize some people may prefer to never see him referred to as “Prince Andrew.” So, we created this toggle to give you that option.
Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor vs. Prince Andrew – Toggle
This toggle can be found in the “Setting” panel. The toggle allows you to choose if you wish Andrew to be referred to as Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor vs. Prince Andrew.
The toggle works via Javascript Code. When Gert’s Royals writes a post, we use a codeword, in this case “Andrew” with either an asterisk* or ampersand& at the end. The Javascript see the codeword and will then display the appropriate term depending on the toggle position. (This toggle has two codewords as we wanted to shorten Mountbatten-Windsor to M-W for tables.)
Because the Javascript is looking for a specific codeword, we have to specially insert it everywhere we want to toggle to have an effect. This is how we are able to limit to posts before October 2025.
