New Years Receptions – Denmark

Each year, the Denmark Monarch holds 4 New Years Receptions (Nytårskur) for various officials. The receptions usually take place over 2 days during the 1st week of the year.

(This event should not be confused with the New Years Gala Banquet on January 1st. You can find out more about that here.)


Typical Schedule

2026 Dates: Jan 5th & 6th

Day A

  • Reception 1 at Christian VII’s Palace (9:30 AM)
    • Attending:
      • Supreme Court judges, the Royal Life Guards and the Officer Corps of the Guard Hussar Regiment.
  • Reception 2 at Christian VIII’s Palace (10:30 AM)
    • Attending:
      • Mayors and regional council chairman
  • Reception 3 at Christiansborg Palace  (2 PM)
    • Attending:
      • Members of the Diplomatic Corp

Day B

  • Carriage ride from Christian IX’s Palace at Amalienborg to Christiansborg Palace, escorted by Guard Hussar Regiment 
  • Reception 4 at Christiansborg Slot (9:30 AM)
    • Attending
      • Officers from the Armed Forces and the National Emergency Management Agency
      • Representatives of major national organizations and royal patronages. 

Dress code 

  • White Tie, with honors (No Tiaras)
  • Uniform or National Dress

Queen Margrethe II’s Reign  

In the final years of Queen Margrethe’s reign, the event was usually attended by herself, Crown Prince Frederik & Crown Princess Mary.
