These definitions are based on how the terms are used in today’s monarchies, especially in Europe. Some of these terms have slightly different meanings in historical, or non-royal contexts or in monarchies outside to Europe.

Working Royal
A member of a royal family who regularly undertakes official duties on behalf of the monarch. Working Royals perform engagements in an official capacity and usually receive tax-payer funding. They are often quasi-government employees, working with and on behalf of their country’s government.
“Non-Working Royals” will often have patronages, and make public appearances. But, they do so in a personal capacity.

Zu
German for “at”. “Zu” is one of the Nobiliary particles. “Zu” is used before the surname/placename of Nobility or Royalty to indicates the family is from that place. In other words, the family has a connect to that location in the past . (It is usually written will all lowercase). This is often used by cadet branches.
The combined “von und zu” it indicates the family is from and still residing at that place.
