Legitimate Child

A child born to parents who are legally married to each other.

(Contrast with Illegitimate child – children both to parents who are not legally married to each other.)

Line of Succession

List of people in line to the throne.

Marquess / Marchioness

A peerage rank below duke and above earl/count.

Order of Precedence

This denotes the seniority of each royal (or person) for official events. Unlike the Line of Succession, this includes spouses. This is used to determine: 

  • The order in which people arrive at an official event, 
  • Order in which they will lay wreaths,
  • Who they must bows/ curtsy to who, 
  • etc.

There are separate orders of precedence for men, women, and for when couples are together. Order of Precedence may also vary based on the formality of events.
